9/11 attacks claim the life of NYPD hero nearly 10 years later

On Thursday, March 10, 2011, a man I admired and respected, a family man, an NYPD sergeant and hero was buried; he was murdered by Muslim terrorists on 9/11/2001.

Sergeant Harold Smith answered the call of duty and had no choice but to imbibe upon the toxic cocktail that became our oxygen; it served as a time bomb that detonated nearly 10-years later….taking him away from his family and friends.

Smitty’s vivacious life provided memories that will endure eternally.

Godspeed Smitty! And may God grant some grace and comfort upon your loved ones in their hour(s) of need.

Obituary, NYPD Sergeant Harold Smith.

Harold Smith was buried on the 17th anniversary of the shooting death of hero Detective Luis Lopez, formerly of the 120 pct. Staten Island.

On March 10, 1993, Det. Lopez, assigned to the Manhattan South Narcotics Tactical Team, was KIA in the war on drugs during a buy and bust operation in lower Manhattan.

Both men was full of life and touched many with their wisdom and unique personalities…it is not a cliché to say that “it is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived.”

Rest in Peace, brothers.
