Tony West Defender of American Taliban Leads DOJ Case Against Arizona

Who is Tony West?

Tony West is an assistant attorney general in the Civil Division of the DOJ. He was nominated by President Obama in January 2009 and confirmed in April. Prior to earning a spot in Holder’s Justice Department and leading the charge against the people of Arizona, Mr. West defended “American Taliban” John Walker Lindh.

Who is the American Taliban?

John Walker Lindh was born in 1981, as an adolescent he became devoted to hip-hop music and pretended to be an African-American rapper during online sessions. After viewing the movie Malcolm X by Spike Lee, John Walker Lindh became interested in Islam. In 1997, the white, Catholic, American born citizen converted to Islam; and the rest, as they say, is history.

Before 9/11, Lindh travelled the Islamic circuit abroad and settled in Afghanistan where he assumed the name Sulayman al-Faris and took up arms with the Taliban. He received training at a camp associated with Al-Qaeda and met Osama bin Laden.

The American Taliban was captured in November 2001, during the Battle of Qala-i-Jangi, a violent Taliban prison uprising where American CIA officer Johnny "Mike" Spann was killed.
